Casa Araça Azul
Araça Azul is located a 3 minute walk outside the small fishing village of Moreré on the island of Boipeba in Bahia. The house is 150 metres from Moreré’s famous beach, voted second best in all Brazil. Situated on a hillside, Araça Azul has wonderful views of palm fringed beaches, crystal waters over the coral reef and of the ocean beyond. Araça Azul means “sun” (literally “mother of the day”) in Tupinambas, the language of the indigenous Indians who inhabited this coastline before the Portuguese arrived. We named it for the incredible sunrises we see every morning.
The main house is located near the top of the hill while the guest house which sleeps two to three people is located nearer the bottom. To walk to the main house takes you through a lush garden filled with fruit tress and native plant species as well as a small kitchen garden with organic herbs and vegetables. The main house is on two levels connected by a wooden stairway. Both the arrival to the house and the house itself contains a lot of stairs – perhaps not suitable for those with mobility problems.
The house is designed to bring the outdoors in and the indoors out, so there is a lot of verandah space linking the rooms and taking advantage of the Bahian sunshine, cool sea breeze and inspiring views. Dotted about the deck are a number of quiet places to sit and lie – the round table around the mangaba tree ,cotton hammocks and chairs made from drift wood.
The sitting room and kitchen/dining room are located on the lower level in two buildings divided from each other by deck space. The sitting room has a sofa and two armchairs custom build from recycled local fishing boats. It has a well-stocked library of books and a projector and screen for watching films in the evening.
The kitchen has a large dining table that seats eight comfortably, masses of storage space and an extremely well equipped kitchen including white marble counter top and sink, large fridge freezer, gas hob and oven, Vitamix blender and all manner of pots and pans for cooking and baking. The lower level also has a small bathroom and a laundry room with storage.
The upper level of the house is reached by a wooden staircase from the lower level. On this level there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom has a super king size bed, wardrobe, hanging space, antique chest and arm chair. It has an en suite bathroom with shower, toilet and large sink area.
The second bedroom has two single beds and hanging/ storage area. The third bedroom has a queen size double bed and hanging/ storage area. Both bedrooms share a bathroom with shower, sink and toilet. The upstairs veranda offers panoramic views over the beach, ocean and forests of Boipeba.
In the construction of Araça Azul, the owners went to great lengths to make the house as environmentally friendly as possible. No trees were cut down for its construction – you can see the only pre-existing tree still grows through the deck! All the hard wood used is certified from sustainable sources and much of the furniture is made from old boats from the island. The hot water is heated by a solar system and our tap water comes from a well while water for the garden is collected in a tank from rain water. We compost all food waste, recycle all glass, cans, tin, cardboard and send as little as possible for rubbish collection. We ask guests to avoid bringing unnecessary waste to the island (removing packaging from goods before coming) and to use only organic and biodegradable personal hygiene products - toothpaste, shampoo, makeup etc. And please try and take plastic waste off the island and leave it in Valença. Boipeba is a small island with a growing number of tourists. We all need to do our bit to maintain it as a pristine paradise. So please think about the environment during your stay – and try to help by picking up rubbish if you see it on the beach and by following our previously mentioned guide lines.
